Meet Dr. Jesse A. Camen, O.D.
Dr. Camen is a full-scope, California-licensed optometrist with experience spanning private practice, corporate optometry, hospital-based care, and military medicine. But beyond the credentials and clinical expertise, what she enjoys most about optometry is getting to know her patients, earning their trust, and helping them feel comfortable and genuinely cared for.

Dr. Camen began her optometric journey at Ferris State University in Michigan before earning her Doctorate of Optometry and Bachelor of Science in Visual Science, cum laude, from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2008. She began her career as an Associate Optometrist with LensCrafters before serving as a Medical Officer in the U.S. Navy from 2009–2012. Following her military service, she returned to private practice and continued to expand her clinical experience alongside nationally renowned ophthalmic surgeons, first in the Chicagoland area and now in San Diego.

Throughout her career, Dr. Camen has remained passionate about both patient care and education. She serves as recognized adjunct faculty for two national Colleges of Optometry and was hand-selected in 2010 to serve as an Examiner for the administration of the National Board of Optometry Examination.

Clinically, Dr. Camen provides comprehensive primary eye care and has a particular interest in the management of dry eye disease and ocular aesthetics. She is a total technology enthusiast and loves bringing the latest tools and techniques to her practice when they can make the patient experience—or the quality of care—even better.

But perhaps the most important thing to know about Dr. Camen is that she believes an eye exam should feel like more than just an appointment. She wants her patients to feel heard, respected, and genuinely cared for. Whether you're coming in for your annual eye exam, struggling with dry eye, looking to optimize your visual performance, or simply haven't been to the eye doctor in a while, you can expect a warm welcome and plenty of time to ask questions.


A Family Business, Built With Love
Dr. Camen’s journey to Rio Vista Optometry is also a very personal one.

In 2020, she married her "California Dream" of a man, Cody, and in 2024, they welcomed their first child, Oliver Gregory. That same year marked another exciting milestone for their growing family: the building and opening of Rio Vista Optometry.

For Dr. Camen, creating Rio Vista was about more than opening another optometry practice. It was about building the kind of place where she would want her own family to receive care—a practice where people are known by name, listened to without judgment, and treated with kindness.

Today, Rio Vista Optometry is proudly a family business serving other families. From the youngest patients seeing an eye doctor for the first time to grandparents who have trusted us with their vision for years, Dr. Camen feels incredibly fortunate to care for the people who make up the community around her.

And when she’s not caring for patients or working on the practice, you’ll most likely find Dr. Camen enjoying the outdoors with Cody, Oliver, and their two four-legged family members. She loves rock climbing, fishing, kayaking, gardening, alfresco dining and sipping—and pretty much anything that involves sunshine, fresh air, and good company.

Of course, Dr. Camen doesn’t run the practice entirely on her own. She is proudly assisted by her two furry colleagues, Slater, our Patient Happiness Coordinator, and Bowie, Head of the Emotional Support Taskforce.

Together, they look forward to welcoming you and your family to Rio Vista Optometry—where exceptional eye care, genuine kindness, and a little family fun all belong under one roof.

Joel has spent over 15 years immersed in the optical world, doing everything from helping patients find the perfect pair of glasses to ensuring a practice runs like clockwork. He has a genuine passion for great patient care and brings a wealth of knowledge in optical management and insurance billing.

In his free time Joel likes watching bad television, buying baseball hats, collecting vinyl records and supporting the San Diego Padres.

Linda wears many hats at our practice, seamlessly moving between patient pre-testing, medical documentation , and styling patients in the optical boutique. Linda thrives on the variety of the job and loves seeing patients leave with a smile. 

Outside of work she enjoys being part of a book club with her friends and taking her youngest daughter swimming .
